Our Children’s Futures Rely on Technology

Technology is becoming an adapt-or-die tool. Just putting “Microsoft Word skills” on your resume isn’t going to impress anyone anymore. The knowledge of current technology is simply an expectation of employers. What would set you apart, though, is the ability to adapt to new technology. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with new technologies, it is important for someone to be able to navigate and adapt to what runs our world. This is why it is important that children grow up with the ability to use technology.

Some have argued that technology is the reason young students have short attention spans. They have said that it is becoming more difficult to engage students in the classroom using traditional teaching methods. Children don’t need to learn how to cite scholarly articles at a young age; what they need is to be able to adapt to change. And that comes from starting to learn technology at an early age. Most people managed to adapt to iOS 7 because we all had iOS 6, and some of us iOS 5. Children can easily adapt to Xbox Kinect because they have played Xbox. What children need is a way to take their interests and education and integrate them with technology. Yes, technology has required us to change the way we teach children. But as we learn more as a species, we change and adapt. That is how we have advanced and this is how technology has advanced too.

There are plenty of apps that kids can use on a tablet or smartphone. For example, kids can draw, create storybooks, write, insert photos, add videos, and add audio in our new app called NoteLedge for Kids. It gives children even more tools than crayons and paper to express their creativity while utilizing the technology provided today. They can more easily transition from making storybooks to making presentations.

Our expectations of technology in modern society are rapidly changing. We expect our adults to be able to adapt in this whirlwind of change, so why not help our children prepare for that expectation as well?
